APSCUF Student Internship

The state APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State Colleges & University Faculties) office is seeking a junior or senior in political science, communications, journalism, or a related field to serve as a government relations/communications intern at the state APSCUF office building in Harrisburg. The student internship must be for academic credit under the supervision of a PASSHE university faculty member. The successful applicant should have strong knowledge of government workings, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. The intern will work under the supervision of both the Communications and Governmental Relations Directors.

The Center for Fiction is looking for an intern to work with fiction author and editor Dawn Raffel on a new online literary magazine. The intern will assist with content management, proofreading and other administrative tasks, and may serve as a first reader on some manuscript submissions.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in editing a literary magazine. Web/CMS experience is a plus, but not required. This is a nonpaying position, but access to an extensive fiction library, study space and use of our Writer’s Studio is available.

The Philadelphia City Paper is searching for ambitious, dedicated, creative, witty writers who want to make an impact at Philadelphia's premier alternative publication.

The City Paper is currently accepting applications for Spring 2012 intern positions. This internship requires a familiarity with the Philadelphia area and an interest in contemporary arts and culture. Primary responsibilities include keeping up with weekly beats for their listings database and writing weekly entertainment-oriented pieces for their paper and A&E blog, Critical Mass. Interns typically put in anywhere from 10 to 20 hours per week (scheduling is flexible)

Four alumni of the Professional Writing (PW) program participated in this semester’s WRI 380 Professional Seminar panel on Friday, October 28, 2011. Professional Seminar, taught by Dr. Elaine Reed, comprises seniors who are interning; other audience members were students in the program’s gateway course, WRI 100 (Contemporary Issues in Professional Writing), taught by Dr. Tony Bleach.

Matthew Reichl, a spring 2007 PW grad with a minor in political science, is editor of the Boyertown Area Times. He also does correspondent work for the Associated Press as the Lehigh County elections stringer. Working for Journal Register Company and Berks-Mont Newspapers, he has worked as editor for several publications since 2007, including Boyertown Area Times, Kutztown Area Patriot and Hamburg Area Item. In the last two months, he has headed the conversion from Quark paginating systems to Adobe InDesign and InCopy as well as SaxoTech as a MediaWare center under Project Thunderdome within Berks-Mont Newspapers as designated “SuperUser.” Before working for Journal Register Company, he was employed by East Penn Press as an associate editor in Allentown.

Rebecca Moulder (rmoulder[at]ECRI.org)

Rebecca Moulder, a fall 2006 PW graduate who minored in public relations, is a medical writer and editor of Health Device Alerts for ECRI Institute, a non-profit Healthcare research agency in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. Her efforts researching, writing, and editing articles about medical device recalls, field corrections, and safety notices help to improve patient care at hospitals and healthcare facilities. The articles are posted to an online database that is used by approximately 2,500 hospitals and healthcare systems worldwide. Rebecca also writes hazard and special reports regarding potential problems, such as surgical fires and radiation overdose, that may affect hospitals. While at KU, Rebecca served as the layout design editor for Shoofly Literary Magazine and as a reporter and copy & line editor forThe Keystone newspaper. Following graduation, Rebecca worked as a part-time reporter forThe Reading Eagle’s Weekend and Entertainment sections. She plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology from Chestnut Hill College beginning in January.

Emily Hammel-Shaver graduated in spring 2008 with a B.A. in Professional Writing and a minor in Public Relations. While at KU, she co-founded and was a managing editor of Shoofly Literary Magazine. Emily completed five undergraduate internships at sites ranging from a PR agency with national clientele to a local weekly newspaper. For three of her Professional Semester internship credits, Emily worked for the Professional Writing Program, designing and major-authoring the program's "Yellow Book," a guide to internships and senior year for PW students. After graduation, Emily worked for a year as a marketing assistant for an executive search firm in Allentown, Pa., while pursuing some freelance work in research and editing. Since Oct. 2009, Emily has handled the marketing for a high-end custom cabinetry company in Perkasie, Pa., where she in charge of the development, writing, and design of the company's marketing materials and communications.

Megan Dubrowski earned a B.A. in English/Professional Writing in spring 2006. While at KU, she served on the staff ofThe Keystone newspaper for two years, one of which she was the news editor. Rohrbach Library PR / Outreach Internship

Description: The Rohrbach Library PR/Outreach intern will work closely with Professor Karen Wanamaker and the Dean of Library Services on library public relations projects. Examples include: written assignments, event posters, presentations, and campus events.

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) sponsors a semester-long internship program for outstanding undergraduate students from the 14 PASSHE universities. These interns work with selected professionals and legislators in various state government offices. Many interns have accepted policy or research positions in state government upon graduation. Interns are appointed and serve for one regular semester (either fall or spring). Interns participate directly in public policy formulation, analysis, and evaluation. We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2011 intern positions. This internship requires a familiarity with the Philadelphia area and an interest in contemporary arts and culture. Primary responsibilities include keeping up with weekly beats for our listings database and writing weekly entertainment-oriented pieces for our paper and A&E blog, Critical Mass. Interns typically put in anywhere from 10 to 20 hours per week (scheduling is flexible).

Other duties include:

* Pitching/writing short pieces for the weekly agenda/arts sections

* Pitching/writing features for the arts, music and food sections

* Pitching/writing content for our various blogs

* Conducting research

* Transcribing interviews

* Fact checking

* Developing and pitching your own story ideas

Participants should preferably be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Recent graduates may also apply. All majors are welcome, but candidates with a background in journalism, communication or English have a leg up. We are more than willing to work with your school in regards to college credit. All internships are unpaid. We are flexible about when you can start and end, but preference will be given to those who can begin late-August and stay through the December holidays.

The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS)

Applications for the FALL 2011 semester of THE HARRISBURG INTERNSHIP SEMESTER (THIS) are now being accepted.

This PASSHE sponsored program allows students to gain experience working in a state executive agency, legislative office or non-profit organization while receiving 15 academic credits toward their major. Students may have any academic major, but they must have demonstrated an interest in public policy or public service.

Applicants must submit an application form, two letters of recommendation, a writing sample, a transcript, and a resume. Students must have earned at least 45 undergraduate credits and a 3.0 or higher grade point average at the time of application.

Each student receives a stipend to help pay for the costs of room, board, and tuition.

Running Press is seeking interns to participate in part-time, single-semester internships in the editorial department. An editorial intern will function as a part-time editorial assistant to a department of 9 editors.

An intern’s average day involves:
reading and evaluating unsolicited proposals
returning rejected proposal material
researching book information, sales numbers, comparison or competitive titles, and any other general info on the internet or in one of our own databases
phone calls and filing, Xeroxing, faxing, moving boxes, and mailing

Depending on the intern’s skills, s/he may be asked to review a document or typeset pages for errors, continuity, corrections from previous versions, or even light copyediting (again, depending on skills); proofreading is the most common job relating to manuscripts/page proofs.

In order to give the greatest number of students experience with our company, this is not a full-time position. Depending on school schedules, interns are expected to be able to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week. Unless otherwise discussed, the internship runs the length of one semester and is offered only to current college students.

Interviews for the summer semester will be conducted during the month of April and the dates of the internship are June 1 to August 31. Interviews for the fall semester will be conducted during July and the dates of the internship are September 1 to December 31. Science Magazine's 2011 Minority Science Writers Internship

Science is a global activity, but the demographics of the journalists who cover it don't reflect that diversity. The Minority Science Writers Internship is for undergraduate students who are interested in journalism as a career and who want to learn about science writing.

The internship takes place each summer at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of AAAS's Science magazine, the largest interdisciplinary journal in the world. Interns spend 10 weeks at Science under the guidance of award-winning reporters and editors, and have a chance to experience what science writers do for a living. Interns are expected to contribute to the weekly news section, including bylined articles in the print and electronic news service.

The paid internship includes travel costs to and from the internship site in Washington, D.C. Living accommodations and expenses are the responsibility of the intern. The internship runs from June to mid-August.

The 2011 summer program application deadline is March 1, 2011. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate academic program when they submit their application. PHMC, an agency of Pennsylvania state government, is the official history agency of the Commonwealth. Responsible for preserving, documenting and interpreting the state's history and making this history accessible to the public, It is a multi-service public history agency, including the Pennsylvania State Archives, The State Museum of Pennsylvania and the State Historic Preservation Office, all in Harrisburg and historic sites and museums located throughout the Commonwealth.

PHMC's internship program provides hands-on pre professional training for graduate and undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in public history. Placements with a wide variety of agency programs, both in Harrisburg and around the state are available. Placement will depend on both student interest and programmatic needs. Each intern will work closely with a staff mentor and, in addition, will participate in educational programs designed to introduce students to a variety of PHMC programs as well as to address broader issues in public history.

Internships run from May 16-August 5, 2011 with some flexibility in work hours. Most internships are unpaid, but full course credit is available.

The HFI Academy Program is an internship program that Haydenfilms Institute runs between 12-16 weeks at the TEK Park location in Breinigsville, PA. We are looking for eager undergraduate students to work in our film office.

The Haydenfilms Institute encourages and champions independent and student filmmakers worldwide through our year-round programming. Our annual Online Film Festival, special events, road shows, educational activities and other programs help filmmakers through all stages of their careers—from choosing to embark on a career in film in high school to producing independent films as a seasoned veteran.

The HFI Academy Intern will have the opportunity to write at least six articles for the organization. The number of work hours per week expected is 40, for 9 credits. Activities include field assignments for film screenings, conducting interviews and reporting on film festivals. Also, the HFI Academy Intern will have the chance to research and pitch assignments of their choice! The internship will consist of some administrative work.

The PA works with the Director on copywriting and then works directly with the graphic designer, printer, and mail house to produce and distribute each piece. Production includes finding photos, artwork, and graphics, copywriting, working with designer on layout, circulating drafts to all departments, integrating changes, and overseeing final proofs, printing, and mailing.

This employee works integrally with a strong, 5-person marketing and public relations team. Every member of the department works with the others on integrated promotional efforts. Together the department’s goal is to enhance the international reputation of the institution, communicate beautifully with patrons at all levels, and ensure the success of each event presented.

Every Friday we publish iThink, an opinion column written by area teens and college students. Students can write on almost anything of interest, from rising college costs and job outlooks to presidential elections and cell phone bans. The columns are typically 550 to 600 words. We usually need them a week before publication.

If students are interested, we put their name on a group e-mail list and send out notices seeking submissions. Students can suggest their own ideas, but we make suggestions as well.

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) invites applications to its Summer 2010 student internship programs, including the Keystone, Diversity, and Apprentice Preservation programs. PHMC, an agency of Pennsylvania state government, is the official history agency of the Commonwealth, responsible for preserving, documenting and interpreting the state’s history and making this history accessible to the public. It is a multi-service public history agency, including the Pennsylvania State Archives, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the State Historic Preservation Office, all in Harrisburg and historic sites and museum located throughout the Commonwealth.

PHMC’s internship programs provide hands-on pre-professional training for graduate and undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in public history. Placements with a wide variety of agency programs, both in Harrisburg and around the state are available. Placement will depend on both student interest and programmatic needs. Each intern will work closely with a staff mentor and, in addition, will participate in educational programs designed to introduce students to a variety of PHMC programs as well as to address broader issues in public history.

MISSOULA, Mont. – Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA), The Voice of the Outdoors, will award scholarships in 2010 to budding outdoor communicators.

Bodie McDowell scholarships are usually awarded annually. Scholarships can range from $1,000 to $5,000. Applicants must be students of outdoor communications fields including print, photography, film, art or broadcasting.

The Bodie McDowell scholarship program is open to all college students, undergraduate and graduate, from all disciplines and all schools. Undergraduate applicants must be entering junior or senior years of study; graduate student applicants must have at least one remaining year of study.

Applicants should have career goals in outdoor communications, provide samples of work, and letters of recommendation. Academic achievement is considered but is not among the top three selection criteria.

OWAA’s Education Committee judges and ranks applicants and typically announces winners by June 1. Checks will be issued to successful recipients by August 10, 2010, before commencement of fall semester.

Duties/Responsibilities

These vary depending on the intern’s area of expertise, the Library’s current strategic goals, and the intern’s availability. Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

• writing/editing: newsletter articles, blog postings, fact sheets
• creating flyers , posters, and bulletin boards
• attending PR Committee meetings
• updating Facebook and Twitter pages
• attending university events such as the Involvement Fair to help promote library services

The intern will, at all times, be expected to:

• display professional, clear verbal and written communication as she/he interacts with various offices and people on and off campus
• maintain good relations with faculty, staff, and patrons
• learn basic library policies and procedures so as to be able to refer patron questions to library employees
• become familiar with the specified/defined library activities as they relate to library outreach and to assist with basic office duties

Internship at Slack

From a Professional Writing student...

The company I work for has several internships available for writing majors.

It's at SLACK Incorporated, which is in Thorofare, NJ, so it will be a bit of a drive from Kutztown.

They have internships available in their newspaper, journals, and books departments.

They are even offering a stipend (I think it's $500) at the end of the internship. I know the Books department (where I work) especially needs someone in soon since we are swamped with work.

General Statement:
Building on two centuries of experience, Taylor & Francis has grown rapidly over the last two decades to become a leading international academic publisher of both books and journals. The Philadelphia office oversees the production, marketing, and management of all US-based journals for the company. The primary function of this position is to expose the student to all aspects of the publishing business while assisting the Editorial Department with the management of our journals. This is NOT a writing or editing position.

Summary of Duties:
§ Update and maintain databases of contact information and other information
§ Research and maintain indexing/abstracting information and services
§ Internet research
§ Assist in maintaining complimentary copy list
§ Coordinate mailings
§ Assist in handling routine inquiries and paperwork
§ Maintain efficient journal filing system
§ Assist with maintenance of website content
§ Handle specific projects as assigned

Required Skills:
Knowledge of PCs; computer programs MS Word, Excel, and the Internet. Familiarity with MS Access a plus. Must be organized and efficient. Ability to balance on going projects and day to day work load.

Hours:
Minimum 15 hours per week. Paid position.
