The Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association Internships (Summer 2015)

The Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association is accepting applications for their 2015 summer internship program at the state Capitol in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The 12-week program for two interns consists of two-week rotations at publications such as The Allentown Morning CallThe Philadelphia InquirerPittsburgh Post-GazettePittsburgh Tribune-ReviewPennlive/Patriot-News, and Capitolwire.com.

Interns will assist reporters covering the state budget and report on committee hearings and other political and policy stories in a fast-paced news environment. Interns are expected to pitch their own ideas as well as take assignments on a variety of subjects. They are seeking candidates who can produce their own stories, whether writing quickly for the web on a breaking news event or turning around longer enterprise pieces.

Applicants should be college juniors or seniors or graduate students.

Start dates are flexible, but interns are expected to complete the full 12-week program.

Pay is $500 per week. Interns are expected to provide their own laptops and cell phones. (A small stipend will be provided to offset phone costs.)

Preference is given to students who plan to pursue a career in journalism covering politics and government, though former interns have gone on to cover a wide array of beats at news organizations around the country.

Mechanicsburg Mystery Bookshop Internship (ongoing)

Mechanicsburg Mystery Bookshop is a bookstore that carries new and used books, primarily in the mystery genre. The bookshop also offers events and educational opportunities for the local community.

As a marketing and public relations intern with Mechanicsburg Mystery Bookstore, under the supervision of owner Deb Beamer and experienced marketing and public relations consultant Ally Bishop, students will gain experience in the following areas:
  • Writing press releases (print and electronic) to promote events and classes offered in the store
  • Create, organize, and monitor social media content on our website, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.
  • Assist in scheduling events and contacting local sites and vendors
  • Create a media kit for the Mechanicsburg Mystery Bookshop
Note: This position is a telecommuting position, but can be held on-site for a student that prefers to be in the store.

The Harrisburg Internship Semester (Spring 2015)

Applications are now being accepted for The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS) for Spring 2015.

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) sponsors a semester-long internship program for outstanding undergraduate students from the 14 PASSHE universities. Interns are appointed and serve for one regular semester (either Fall or Spring). The internship program provides students with a meaningful professional assignment as well as an enriching academic experience. Students also participate in an internship seminar that meets at the Dixon University Center and is supervised by a resident faculty member. The seminar integrates each student's work experience with a rigorous academic component. Students earn a total of 15 credits for the internship plus seminar. THIS offers a stipend to cover student expenses.

The Harrisburg Internship Semester is recommended for students who have completed their junior year of studies and is only available for students who can use the internship credits within their own program of study.
