Rohrbach Library PR / Outreach Internship

Description: The Rohrbach Library PR/Outreach intern will work closely with Professor Karen Wanamaker and the Dean of Library Services on library public relations projects. Examples include: written assignments, event posters, presentations, and campus events.

The ideal candidate will be extremely motivated and take the initiative to begin projects under direct supervision and though consultation with Professor Wanamaker. The focus will be on projects that support the Library’s Strategic Plan.

Supervision: The internship is supervised by Karen Wanamaker, outreach librarian.
Hours: The intern will work between 150 and 450 hours during the internship semester (depending on the number of credits involved) in the library’s Curriculum Materials Center office, where the Library’s outreach efforts are coordinated.

Unpaid Internships are offered in the fall and spring semesters.
  • Professional writing major or public relations minor
  • Coursework in writing for PR, journalism, and copy and line editing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent skills in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
  • Microsoft Publisher experience
  • InDesign experience  
Duties/Responsibilities: These vary depending on the intern’s area of expertise, the Library’s current strategic goals, and the intern’s availability. Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • writing/editing newsletter articles, blog postings, fact sheets
  • creating flyers, posters, and bulletin boards
  • meeting with library faculty to gather information for assignments
  • attending university events such as an involvement fair to help promote library services
  • learning basic library policies and procedures so as to be able to refer patron questions to library employees
  • becoming familiar with library activities as they relate to library outreach
  • assisting with basic office duties
The intern will, at all times, be expected to:
  • display professional, clear verbal and written communication as she/he interacts with various offices and people on and off campus
  • maintain good relations with faculty, staff, and patrons
  • be punctual and properly attired

Opportunites at BCTV

Writing opportunities for students are available at BCTV, the nonprofit community television station and website in Reading.

BCTV is a great way for students to practice writing, organize a multimedia package, tell stories in creative ways, add to a portfolio, and learn about the role of journalism in society.

News and commentary about activities, events, and issues are welcomed as part of their ongoing citizen journalism project.

Berks Encore Internship (Spring 2012)

Berks Encore, a nonprofit agency serving the needs of Berks County older adults, is looking for a full- or part-time writing/marketing intern for the Spring semester. 

 The successful candidate will write for a variety of media, including but not limited to:
  • Monthly newsletter
  • Web site
  • Press releases 
  • Special events
  • Facebook
  • Email newsletters
The candidate will write for a variety of audiences, including those over the age of 50, their adult children, businesses and other nonprofit agencies. In addition to writing, the position includes assisting with special events, working closely with the Vice President of Marketing and Development. 

The individual must be able to work independently and as part of a team, be able to multi-task as well as be willing to perform duties including bulk mailings and other administrative functions.  The work schedule is Monday through Friday, and the hours are flexible (between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.).  Candidates must have access to a vehicle, as travel may be required to other center sites located throughout the county.  This internship is unpaid.

The Harrisburg Internship Semester (Spring 2012)

From Professor Holoviak, Kutztown University The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS) Coordinator:

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) sponsors a semester-long internship program for outstanding undergraduate students from the 14 PASSHE universities. These interns work with selected professionals and legislators in various state government offices. Many interns have accepted policy or research positions in state government upon graduation. Interns are appointed and serve for one regular semester (either fall or spring). Interns participate directly in public policy formulation, analysis, and evaluation. Their work experience includes report and speech writing, research, and direct involvement with program initiation, implementation, and evaluation. The internship program provides students with a meaningful professional assignment as well as an enriching academic experience.

This is a paid internship which includes 15 credits of internship and seminar credits. The application deadline for Spring 2012 internships is Friday, October 7.
