PA Historical Internship

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) invites applications to its Summer 2010 student internship programs, including the Keystone, Diversity, and Apprentice Preservation programs. PHMC, an agency of Pennsylvania state government, is the official history agency of the Commonwealth, responsible for preserving, documenting and interpreting the state’s history and making this history accessible to the public. It is a multi-service public history agency, including the Pennsylvania State Archives, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the State Historic Preservation Office, all in Harrisburg and historic sites and museum located throughout the Commonwealth.

PHMC’s internship programs provide hands-on pre-professional training for graduate and undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in public history. Placements with a wide variety of agency programs, both in Harrisburg and around the state are available. Placement will depend on both student interest and programmatic needs. Each intern will work closely with a staff mentor and, in addition, will participate in educational programs designed to introduce students to a variety of PHMC programs as well as to address broader issues in public history.

Internships run from May 17-August 6, 2010 with some flexibility in work hours. Most internships are unpaid, but full course credit is available. Questions may be directed to .

MISSOULA, Mont. – Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA), The Voice of the Outdoors, will award scholarships in 2010 to budding outdoor communicators.

Bodie McDowell scholarships are usually awarded annually. Scholarships can range from $1,000 to $5,000. Applicants must be students of outdoor communications fields including print, photography, film, art or broadcasting.

The Bodie McDowell scholarship program is open to all college students, undergraduate and graduate, from all disciplines and all schools. Undergraduate applicants must be entering junior or senior years of study; graduate student applicants must have at least one remaining year of study.

Applicants should have career goals in outdoor communications, provide samples of work, and letters of recommendation. Academic achievement is considered but is not among the top three selection criteria.

OWAA’s Education Committee judges and ranks applicants and typically announces winners by June 1. Checks will be issued to successful recipients by August 10, 2010, before commencement of fall semester.

The Bodie McDowell Scholarship is named after longtime OWAA member Bodie McDowell, an OWAA past president and recipient of OWAA’s prestigious Ham Brown Award, an award recognizing members for devoted past service to the organization. McDowell is a longtime advocate and fundraiser for the scholarship program.

Since its inception in 1927, OWAA has become the largest and oldest association of professional outdoor communicators in the United States. OWAA’s mission is to improve the professional skills of its members, set the highest ethical and communications standards, encourage public enjoyment and conservation of natural resources and mentor the next generation of professional outdoor communicators.

The Hill School

Internship Opportunities at The Hill School

Prestigious boarding school seeks mature students for hands-on internships in communications/public relations. Options may include sports information and multimedia production.

The Communications Office of The Hill School (Pottstown, Pa) offers internships during the fall and spring semesters as well as the summer months. Flexible scheduling allows students to intern either part- or full-time, for academic credit or for experience only. Interns will have the opportunity to build a diverse portfolio of writing samples and related work.

This position is appropriate for dependable individuals with solid writing and communications skills and an interest in public relations, journalism, website content (including video and audio production for the web), sports information, and/or events planning.

Assignments may include compiling "Class Notes" and articles for the School's alumni magazine; writing press releases; proofreading; preparing content for the School's website; assisting with constituency event preparations; conducting research using the Internet and other resources; and occasional office support tasks. Specific internship assignments may be determined according to the student's particular interests and skills.

Although this is an unpaid position, a stipend will be granted to the intern upon his or her successful internship completion. When school is in session, interns may enjoy lunch in the dining hall (free of charge). It is essential that the intern show respect for institutional culture as well as confidentiality concerns. Interns will be expected to dress professionally.

Harrisburg Internship

The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS) is open to any major who has completed 45 credits and has a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Students will receive 15 credits for this professional experience in Harrisburg working with state administrators or state legislators.

THIS is sponsored by PASSHE to provide students with the opportunity to participate directly in public policy formulation, analysis and evalution.

Library Outreach/CMC Intern

Description: The Kutztown University library outreach/CMC intern will work closely with Professor Karen Wanamaker and the Dean of Library Services on library public relations projects. These projects may include written assignments, assisting with presenting workshops/training sessions, and/or attending campus events.

The ideal candidate will be extremely motivated and take the initiative to begin projects under direct supervision and though consultation with Professor Wanamaker. The focus will be on projects that are a part of the Library’s Outreach Plan or that will improve the Library’s current projects, goals, and objectives.

Supervision: The internship is supervised by Karen Wanamaker, Education Librarian and chair of the library’s Public Relations Committee.

Hours: The intern will work between 150 and 300 hours during the internship semester - the equivalent of 3-6 credit hours - in the library’s Curriculum Materials Center office, where the Library’s outreach efforts are coordinated. Unpaid Internships are offered in the fall and spring semesters.


• Professional writing major or public relations minor
• Coursework in writing for PR, journalism, and copy and line editing
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Excellent skills in the Microsoft Office Suite

• Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
• Microsoft Publisher experience
• InDesign experience


These vary depending on the intern’s area of expertise, the Library’s current strategic goals, and the intern’s availability. Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

• writing/editing: newsletter articles, blog postings, fact sheets
• creating flyers , posters, and bulletin boards
• attending PR Committee meetings
• updating Facebook and Twitter pages
• attending university events such as the Involvement Fair to help promote library services

The intern will, at all times, be expected to:

• display professional, clear verbal and written communication as she/he interacts with various offices and people on and off campus
• maintain good relations with faculty, staff, and patrons
• learn basic library policies and procedures so as to be able to refer patron questions to library employees
• become familiar with the specified/defined library activities as they relate to library outreach and to assist with basic office duties

Internship at Slack

The company I work for has several internships available for writing majors.

It's at SLACK Incorporated, which is in Thorofare, NJ, so it will be a bit of a drive from Kutztown.

They have internships available in their newspaper, journals, and books departments.

They are even offering a stipend (I think it's $500) at the end of the internship. I know the Books department (where I work) especially needs someone in soon since we are swamped with work.

Editorial Intern: Taylor & Francis, Inc.

General Statement:
Building on two centuries of experience, Taylor & Francis has grown rapidly over the last two decades to become a leading international academic publisher of both books and journals. The Philadelphia office oversees the production, marketing, and management of all US-based journals for the company. The primary function of this position is to expose the student to all aspects of the publishing business while assisting the Editorial Department with the management of our journals. This is NOT a writing or editing position.

Summary of Duties:
§ Update and maintain databases of contact information and other information
§ Research and maintain indexing/abstracting information and services
§ Internet research
§ Assist in maintaining complimentary copy list
§ Coordinate mailings
§ Assist in handling routine inquiries and paperwork
§ Maintain efficient journal filing system
§ Assist with maintenance of website content
§ Handle specific projects as assigned

Required Skills:
Knowledge of PCs; computer programs MS Word, Excel, and the Internet. Familiarity with MS Access a plus. Must be organized and efficient. Ability to balance on going projects and day to day work load.
